Merimbula Airport

L+R was commissioned by Bega Valley Shire Council to undertake the concept, preliminary and detailed design of several related projects to upgrade and expand the Merimbula Airport airside and landside facilities. The planning and design of these projects involved refining the concept layouts to a level suitable for environmental approvals, aviation regulatory compliance and construction.

The projects scope included the provision of runway extensions to the north and south of the existing runway. This involved prepared of an earthworks platform on cleared mangrove swamp immediately adjacent to the environmentally sensitive Merimbula Lake. Around 4,500 m2 of new pavement was provided at each end to allow an additional 120 m of take-off length for aircraft.

Strengthening and rehabilitation of approximately 52,500 m2 of existing runway, taxiway and apron pavement with foamed bitumen stabilisation was completed, to complement the new aircraft capabilities provided by the runway extensions. This incorporated re-shaping to bring the pavement grading into compliance with current aerodrome standards requirements.

A new Commercial and General Aviation Hangar Precinct was developed as part of the project. This comprised around 15,000 m2 of new airside pavements, along with an internal access road and full services provision for 20 new hangar sites of varying sizes to suit the anticipated demand. Associated intersection works with the adjacent Arthur Kaine Drive, including widening and rehabilitation of an approximately 500 m length of this busy external road, was also documented by L+R.

Accessibility

Our Commitment To Accessibility

A number of accessibility features have been implemented across our website to make the website more accessible to people with visual, motor or cognitive disabilities. Below are some enhancements to our website that we consider beneficial to our users:

Links

  • All links are text-based. If an image is used for any link, techniques are used to keep the text within the code so they are still text-friendly for screen readers, text-based browsers and for those who browser with styles off (this included consoles that cannot render cascading style sheets).
  • All link rollovers are high-contrast so they are easily distinguished from regular text and headlines that are not clickable.
  • Link content text is contextual when possible (eg. Instead of ‘more’, the link may read ‘more recent news’) to make navigation easier for screen readers.
