Qantas Airbus A380 LAX Maintenance Operations
Client: Qantas Airways Limited
Rehbein Airport Consulting was commissioned by Qantas Airways Limited in July 2008 to assess issues associated with the historic introduction of the Airbus A380 to their first scheduled route from Australia to Los Angeles (LAX) on 20 October 2008. The commission entailed an assessment of the impact on the existing maintenance facilities at LAX and the development of a forward concept plan to allow future growth as Qantas increases the number of A380s in operation.
The assessment particularly dealt with the investigation of suitable taxiway tow routes and hangar / maintenance apron aircraft manoeuvrability and storage, to be compliant with the ICAO Annex 14 regulations. A staged forward concept was developed for towing aircraft to the maintenance area utilising existing taxiways and a proposed cross field taxiway outlined in the airport’s Airside Development Plan. This concept allows for future increased A380 maintenance operations in the hangar area and is meshed with the Qantas forward schedule to operate the A380 on the route over the next five years.
