Dialysis Unit Refurbishment
Client: Queensland Health
Lambert & Rehbein was commissioned by Queensland Health to provide Civil and Structural engineering services for the refurbishment of the existing Nurses Quarters Building into a Dialysis Unit. The new use for the nurses quarters will have a capacity for ten patient areas, a dedicated ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ store areas, and plant room. The store areas and plant room needed to meet a 6.5kPa live load rating. External works included a new carpark, entry road and delivery area capable of carrying 10 tonne vehicles.
The Cairns office assisted with the preliminary investigation of the site, including a structural survey of the existing subfloor framing and roof framing system. The Civil division provided the design for the car park, site levels and stormwater drainage. The Structural division provided structural engineering design and documentation services for the building works. Two key elements of the refurbishment work included the strengthening of the existing timber bearer and joist floor to meet the new loading requirements, and the strengthening of the roof framing system where existing walls had to be removed to accommodate the new patient areas.
